Snowshoes all day. We started out after 8am and there were a few groups before us. All either started in or switch to snowshoes after the first mile. The trail was very soft. Engine Hill follows a good path, a bit higher than necessary in a couple spots but none the worse for wear, its a good line. We caught up to the lead group shortly before the end of the whack to find the path drifted in from there on. Iso Express path was mostly easy to follow, only recall one easy duck under. Higher up had significant drifting. All of it should be well path out with snowshoes now but the base is still very soft and will not support bare-booting. On the return once past the Wilderness sign on Rocky Branch we found there were sets of boots ahead of us that post holds quite a bit. I assume they came down Rocky branch. Hopefully all the snowshoe traffic patches those post holes up.
It was a great day weather-wise. Not overly crowded with only about 8 or 10 friendly hikers out today. Nice meeting a few people an putting faces to NETC names (LGD, BlueCollar, Heat Lightning). |
