Lots of happy people on the trails today - I was certainly happy to be back outside! Liberty Spring is nearly all hard packed with foot traffic and the deep freeze, except in a few places, but I think snowshoes would be a bit overkill. All crossings are bridged. Trails are in pretty good shape, with post holes in a few locations just before summits. I put my snowshoes on at the Franconia Ridge/Liberty Spring Junction as I knew I'd want them going to Flume and didn't want to mess with putting them on at the Liberty summit. The bypass at the Liberty summit to skip the steep, slanted slab just beneath Liberty on the way to Flume wasn't well broken out. Someone tried to go through there without snowshoes and it looks like they ended up waist deep in snow. I did my best to fill in the holes and smooth it out and it looked to be in much better shape on the return trip. All that being said, this might change with the warmer weather in the forecast later on in the week. Hopefully we'll have some nice thaw/freeze cycles to finally get a good solid base in place before then. |
