Comments
Comments: The trail is a hard packed highway going up, perfect for just spikes. HOWEVER, in the large glade about two miles up, drifting started to completely obscure the trail; from there to the summit, it was on-again-off-again drifts/hard-pack. I switched to snowshoes there, and did not regret my decision. I left the snowshoes on until I got past there again on the way down; the trail was pretty loose over the solid base up high, and they were a lot easier to walk in. Most other hikers on the day seemed to be sticking to spikes, with most of them not having snowshoes with them as an alternative. They wasn't any postholing, just slippery churn in the drifted areas. Despite trip reports from a week ago, there was no sign of tracks at all from the summit going towards the Stoney Brook Trail side, although there was one car parked over at that trailhead in the afternoon, so somone might've broken it out at this point.
