Comments
Comments: Both of us wore Microspikes from trailhead up Lincoln Woods Trail and about 1 mile up Osseo Trail. Good packed down track with about 1 inch of fresh powder along this mile. Snow depth increased to 2 to 3 inches at the 1 mile point and we switched to MSR snowshoes, which we wore to the summit and back to the trailhead. At ~3,200 feet snow depth significantly increased. 12 to 18 inches of fresh, very dense powder. It became obvious that the Osseo trail had not been broken out since the polar front over the weekend. In the steep sections with deep powder we experienced a lot of slide back, which proved tiring. The ladders/steps had 18 inches of new powder and only a tiny section of one ladder was visible. Crampons and ice axe were useless here, so we used our snowshoes to kick steps. Ascent time was a very slow 5 hours due to the drifting. Just below the summit the sun broke out. We had great views of the Pemi Wilderness and the Franconia Ridge. Heading down we had to glissade the steep sections and ladders due to the deep unconsolidated powder. The two of us made a good track up and back, but the trail will need another 4 to 6 hikers to pack it down. Snowshoes are a necessity. We saw fresh bare-boot tracks from the Flume Slide Trail to the summit with very deep post holes.
