Slow and steady up the groomed ski trails of Wildcat. Deep chewed-up snowdrifts up to Wildcat D platform. From there the trail was a mix of semi-consolidated monorail and mashed potato churn. The temps hovering just above freezing wasn't helping. Still, the ridge was a fairly easy traverse compared to other trails. The weather turned windier and foggier/cloudier as the morning progressed. Wildcat A was packed down but largely socked in. The descent to Nineteen Mile Brook was a frequently steep posthole-a-palooza. Good luck to anyone heading up over the next few days. The snow was getting progressively softer as the day wore on. NMBT was OK until the Carter Dome Trail intersection. At that point, I made the switch from shoes to spikes and wrapped up the rest of the hike in short order. The three-mile road back to the Wildcat was a drag but the views of the clouds swirling over and around the summit of Washington made for an epic backdrop. And thus concludes 26 & 27 of my winter 48. |
