I turned back approximately 0.2 miles below Gulfside on the Jewell Trail when I got to a steep and icy stretch where I was slipping down in my snowshoes. I switched to full crampons and that felt pretty good. I went up another 50’ or so and then realized that I didn’t want to solo ice climb in a no-fall zone at 4580’ so I turned back.
I have no regrets and absolutely feel that this was a successful day; I made it back to my car unharmed!!
So here is the question, and the reason that I am posting this. Andrea (an accomplished Grid-er and super-nice person!) and her hubby snowshoed this route yesterday. (See her post). So why did I have trouble? Possibly it’s because I am not as experienced. Possibly the conditions changed. Maybe a bit of both. We’ll never know. What is important, from my perspective, is to do only what I am personally comfortable doing. It is tempting to think, “I should be able to do this; other people just did this,” and to press on regardless, but for me that is not a safe way to think. The summit will be there next time and the lists and patches can wait. Stay safe and hike on!! |
