Being the final section of Mahoosuc trail I needed I decided to hit it on a quiet Tuesday. Plowed parking gave me hopes of a broken out trail. The first section of the hike follows the road and snowmobile track but veering off into the wood it was a roughly broken trail with rough footing from bareboot traffic. Upon reaching the Mascot Pond spur it was apparent that virgin snow lay ahead. It was a breakable crust with powder underneath so that proved to be an annoying and strenuous undertaking. Further up in elevation the crust subsided slightly but I was punching through kneedeep in spots. I was delighted to finally reach the viewpoint which connected my previous track and sipped hot cocoa while taking in the sunshine and immense views. The descent proved far easier and quicker. If venturing up this way snowshoes are a must! It's a wonderful hike so I'm not sure why it isn't traveled as often in winter. |
