Comments
Comments: Snowshoes from start to finish. Tripoli Road is a groomed XC ski trail so you should use snowshoes and stick to the edges. It can get busy with skiers as it was this afternoon. Two of us were the first up this way today. Mt. Osceola Trail up to Osceola is in rough shape, chopped up with many deep divots and post holes. We had an inch or so of fresh snow overnight which coated the crusty surface. The base is far from stable. Above 3k ft the fresh powder was deeper and the path was drifted in, drifts approaching knee high approaching the summit. The short spur to the highpoint didn't seem to have much traffic recently. From the outlook towards East we were following tracks from a hiker in spikes who came up from the Kanc this morning, we then encountered another in snowshoes who was doing a loop. Between the two peaks the base was more stable but still quite soft in areas. There is ice under the snow in the steeper sections but good traction today. We took the bypass of the bypass of the chimney as did everyone else we saw today. Just below we encountered a larger group (Per and friends) all in snowshoes who also came up from the Kanc leaving the nicest stretch of trail we had all day. On the return we noted the chimney and bypass both looked doable but too narrow and bony, we didn't feel like switching to crampons just to switch back. On our descent we encountered two other hikers coming up in spikes who were sinking and post holing a bit. This trail really needs a lot more snowshoe traffic (and another dumping of snow to fill in all those postholes). This is only going to get worse with the warmer temps coming.
