Comments
Comments: We parked under the power lines. The snowmobile trail is hard and crusty, spikes are fine. The herd path had one set of deep postholed prints on it so we smoothed it out as best we could with snowshoes. The lower part of the trail before you get to Mt Surpise was ice and hard packed snow. In the morning with the colder temps, spikes were okay but by afternoon you need snowshoes to prevent postholing. We already had our snowshoes on so we kept them on all day. Above there the snow was soft, drifted, and unconsolidated. With 2 others starting around the same time, we laid a nice track. Sadly, everyone else behind us was in spikes and the trail was littered with postholes on the way down. Some were easily 12 to 16 inches deep or more. With the warm temps this upcoming week, snowshoes are the name of the game. There is no way you will not sink otherwise and your lovely hike will turn into a miserable slog with you sinking with every step. Bring the shoes. Wear the shoes. Do not carry them on your pack and trash the trail, please.
