Crawford Path to Pierce was well packed and solid in the morning in the morning cold temperatures. On the way back in the afternoon the trail to Pierce had softened in the warmer temperatures and was getting chopped up. The Crawford path from Pierce to Eisenhower however was a mix of soft packed snow, breakable crust, and boilerplate ice. We used snowshoes both ways that didn't really pack the snow. On the way back the sun had softened the track and the rototillers had really started to tear up the trail including some deep post holes on the edges of the trough. Snow shoes would be best. The trail up the summit cone was pretty boney, with sheets of ice in sections. Most icy sections you could get around. The icy rocks just after the first ladder had one sketchy step. We took another route on the way down.
Wind was pretty blustery on the way to Eisenhower but diminished on the way back. Really a pleasant hike going back to Pierce. |
