 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Three other vehicles in the Ferncroft lot at just after 8:00AM. Many more vehicles upon return at about 2:00PM although there was still open spots. The lot was mostly dirt. Ferncroft Road was icy but some surfaces had melted to the gravel including the access road to the trailhead farmhouse. |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Rock hopped across the east branch of the Wonalancet River on ascent. Some ice on rock in AM. Water level is not high.
Used the downed trees (logs) to cross brook on descent. Most of the surface of the two logs was dry. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trail in good condition. Any trees across the trail were at a height above the snow pack for easy passage under without ducking. |

As noted on prior reports, the Dicey's Mill Trail was packed snow with many postholes. Most holes were 6" to 12" deep with some deeper. The pocked surface would be troublesome for snowshoe travel. Fortunately, the surface remained solid, so I did not need to take the snowshoes off the pack. In the midday sun, the surficial layer of the snow became greasy so there was some tendency to slide. There was some small patches of ice in the upper portion of the trail. The ice was easy to avoid by stepping over or around. Sharp microspikes proved adequate for the trail conditions.
Good views from both the west and east ledge lookouts. The Walden Trail and East Loop Trails were roughly broken out by boots (I did not use other than to reach the east outlook). There was an old snowshoe trench leading towards the north outlook, but it was partially filled in with snow.
Lots of hikers on Passaconaway and Whiteface. Nice chatting with Lucky Laura and the manager of the AMC Little Lyford Camp in Maine's 100 mile wilderness who is working on the NH 48 4K peaks. |
