Cherry Mt trail was solid pack with an uneven surface. Micro spikes did the job. The spur was a loose pack commonly used snowmobile trail. Marthas Mile to Owl's Head had not been broken out. However, there we two hikers ahead of us that posthold the .8 to Owl. We put our snowshoes on and made an attempt to open up the trail. By no means is it consolidated. Martha's Mile will need some more snowshoeing love. The last bit of the climb to Owl was a bit sketchy with loose snow over ice. We decided to wear the snowshoes for the entire descent back to the car. With the temperatures in the mid 30s, the snow was softening. Snowshoes helped to level out some of the lumps and bumps.
This sub 4k, will make you work, with a 1100ft gain in the second mile. Nice views of the Presidentias and Pemi from Martha. The unencumbered view on Owl is worth the extra mileage. |
