Gorgeous day for a hike above the trees! Wind was predicted to decrease throughout the day, so we opted for a later start and were rewarded with a rather warm return! 2 of us headed up around 9:45am and I was running late and came up behind at around 10:15am. Caught up at Jacob's ladder. The area above the ladder is freakishly lacking snow, so the trail runs way off to the Left instead of up against the railroad as it has in years past. There was one or 2 sections that were a bit sketchy if you don't like being on an angle, so we opted at that point to take the Jewell down on our return. Snowshoes all the way up and around Clay, then gave up and I went for my crampons and my companions, there microspikes. There was lots of ice, but easily gone around in spikes. We all did fine and left them on back to the lot. Jefferson was stunning! Lots of rock exposure and we saw people in all kinds of traction. The top of the Jewell is a mess or rock, ice, and small snow patches. Below treeline, it is in great shape and hard packed down the center. The crossing just before the lot was bridged, but narrowly. Be safe up there! |
