Beautiful day in the Osceolas. Trail is very well packed the whole way, though not yet too icy. Microspikes were perfect along the Greeley Ponds Trail. We switched to crampons for the ascent up the Mount Osceola Trail. With current conditions you may be able to do it in spikes or snowshoes, but crampons work best on the many steep pitches. Ridgeline from East Osceola to Osceola was similarly well-packed. We took the direct route up the chimney, and based on the lack of tracks were seemingly the first party in a while to do so. Crampons and an axe are a must for that pitch, though it's easily avoidable if you'd rather bypass it; the bypass is well broken out. |
