A lovely day for Moriah via Carter-Moriah trail. We wore micro-spikes ascending until just past Mt. Surprise, then switched to snowshoes for the remainder of the hike. Strong wind gusts as the summit made for a quick stop. The trail is hard-packed throughout, with some old postholes evident on the sides of the trail. The snow was getting a little soft by early afternoon with the warmer temps. Just before returning to Bangor St., we took the side trail that runs through the woods to the snowmobile trail, then turned left to head down the hill to the parked cars. Our 5 sets of snowshoes smoothed out this post-holed side trail so it is navigable now. Sarah, Michael, Renee, Gregg, and I enjoyed the fabulous views today. We saw only one other hiker today who was doing a loop up Stony Brook and down Carter-Moriah. |
