A trail runner at the trailhead told me spikes all the way as it was perfect sticky snow. I, of course, only brought snowshoes and crampons based on all the earlier reports. Dumped my snowshoes and headed up [mistake!]. Bare-booted to the steeps then crampons on. They were damn near useless going up and there was NO sticky snow. That was all below the steep section. Between the peaks was unpacked fluff up to my shins. I only post-holed (and not deeply at that) about 4 times and the snow is such that I don't think I did much damage to the trail. I would VERY much have preferred my snowshoes going up and across. Coming down the steep section below East peak, however, was a breeze in the crampons! All-in-all, the trail is in good shape. Took the bypass of the bypass up the chimney with ease. Stay safe out there and, for the love of God, don't listen to trail runners!!! |
