Hopefully the cold temps will freeze the trail up, it is very much April conditions. I wore snowshoes the entire hike because I find it easier on my body. The majority of people and the friend I was with were in spikes. The trail past Champney Falls is very chopped up and post holed. Snow shoes are not going to fix it. We encountered one incredibly rude woman who upon seeing that my friend wasn’t wearing snowshoes interrogated her about it. My friend kindly shared with her that snowshoes were bothering her hips… this woman proceeded to ask her if “she had hip replacement surgery” in a mocking, attitude filled tone.
I understand that the majority of people who use this site and those who hike multiple times a week, care about keeping the trails in good shape. I care too. It is safer not to have super deep holes, there are a lot of reasons. I get it.But not enough to make people who can’t wear or can’t afford snowshoes feel unwelcome and ashamed. That is not okay. Hike your own hike. There will ALWAYS be people postholing. [Sorry, this is flawed logic! Snowshoes are an essential item for winter mountain hiking.]
If you want to yell at me, please do, and stop taking it out on other hikers. Instagram- emily_cummings603 |
