Beautiful day. Our original plan was Ike/Pierce today, but wind forecast for later in the afternoon was ramping up, so we moved west to the Kins'.
Hardly encountered any wind on the ridge until reaching South Kinsman. About 1/2 mile down our return descent down the Mt Kinsman trail, started to hear the winds winding up more. No regrets whatsoever about Ike - we would have been much colder. Great day on trails.
Worn microspikes the whole time. Snow/ice was generally firm and post holing wasn't a concern.
Looking ahead Snowshoes might be needed if/when temps lift into the 30's on the ridge.
Down, well below the last river crossing the snow/ice was melting off monorail on last bit of trail to the parking area. The surrounding hillsides were largely bare.
Thanks to the ladies from Salem and Rye for being such good, kind sports with us all. We repeatedly passed each other on the trail. Both our groups had fun making light of it. Made the hike all the more enjoyable. We took too many breaks to catch up with you all on the way out. Happy trails! |
