This might be the last 'firm & fast' day with tonight's storm coming. All the trails were really packed with excellent grip and just a few short, powdery sections from Tom out to Willey on Willey Range trail. I thought I was going to die going up the lower part of Avalon trail, my 62-year old self is only at about 85% fitness and I forgot how steep it was. But I persevered and the misery ended about .1 past the Avalon spur. It got overcast and was pleasantly cold but never bitter and wind was minimal. The gray jays were out in force today and they are the only wild animals I ever feed because they thrive near the alpine zone and deserve a well-earned treat. Great views today particularly out to Mt Carrigain and Signal Ridge. I was most impressed by a family of 5, including a 5 and 10 (educated guess) year-old that did the same loop I did. They were all moving quite well and I didn't hear a single complaint! Another family of 4 with two young girls scooted right up to the Avalon lookout and I think they loved the steepness. Only a few spots of ice, mostly from a butt-slider coming down A-Z that shaved the grippy topcoat from the steep parts of the trail; no big deal. 3:55 total time... I'm not as old & creaky as I thought. Come on snowstorm, I'm ready for you!
