First one up. Trail covered up with fresh snow from night before but easy to navigate in lower sections. Micro spikes and gaiters proved sufficient although steep sections below tree-line tested the grip here and there -not enough to justify cramp-ons. Higher tree-line challenged ability to spot the trail - powder and snow drift at times just below the knee. Breaking tree-line was largely frozen over streams - hard ice - and crusty with granular snow underneath. Lost trail markers as tree-line opened up but navigating to the hut by sight proved quick and easy given the grip and moderate slope. Winds pretty strong up at the hut and lake justifying layering up - died down dramatically by the time I began the descent and low pressure kicked in. Passed 4 hikers, some with a dog, otw down. A+++ would do again. |
