Comments
Comments: Alfie and I broke trail until about a half mile from the summit junction. Due to the very cold temps and fresh snow, Alfies paws and legs were ice balled (not snow… full blown ice). We never have trouble, he has his paws trimmed and mushers wax applied… but in this case it just froze into ice which neither he or I were successful in removing. Opted to turn around though he was behaving normally. There were bits of blood in the ice he did manage to rip off. That was bad news bears.

Anyway. Wore snowshoes the whole time, but the snow was at most 6” deep and fresh light powder that did not compress. So my snowshoes took a beating on the rocks hidden underneath. I didn’t bring spikes otherwise I honestly would have switched. The rocks were causing my snowshoes to catch and turn, making it slow going so as not to roll an ankle or fall.I felt it was more dangerous in my snow shoes with the minimal amount of snow pack.
