Comments
Comments: We wimped out on a bigger hike due to the cold and unknown trail conditions (the days of breaking out 5+ miles and 3k vertical by ourselves have sadly past). After it warmed up a bit this morning we headed to Doublehead. About 13F at 11:30 in the parking lot. We chose snowshoes for the conditions and the heel lifts and headed up the ski trail, which was nice packed powder. Old Path had seen two snowshoers followed by two booters since the new snow. We smoothed out the boot tracks and met the two snowshoers about halfway up as they descended. The track we left was nice and flat but soft powder so best suited for snow shoes. The girls had gone as far as the westerly overlook on South Doublehead. The great views to the Presi's we saw from the base were unfortunately replaced by clouds and light snow so we headed down the unbroken spur to the end of the trail and the easterly overlook, where we enjoyed a good view with lunch and some hot tea. It didn't take long for the light snow to move east and obscure the view into the Wild River Wilderness, and with wind chills in the single digits on top we didn't linger. The New Path toward Dundee Rd had not seen traffic since the new snow. The trough was filled in fully with about 8 inches of light powder, and underneath was hardpacked snow and ice. Given the steep pitch on the top half of the New Path descending in crampons would have been best, but also would have left a messy trail so we snowshoe skied instead. Snowshoes would be best for ascending, and now that the powder has been packed down a little crampons would be good for descending the New Path. Good luck to the five guys we met in the parking lot heading up to stay the night in the cabin!
