Comments
Comments: Despite the cold forecast, it was a beautiful hiking day with no winds, even at the summits. I got a late start (9:33 AM) & was the last of 6 hikers on the O's yesterday so the trail was well broken out. Only 2 of us wore snowshoes, the others wore micro spikes. The snow was soft packed or unpacked & spikes made for choppy conditions but few postholes. The trail going up E Osceola had sections where the snow had given way so traction was a bit challenging as there are patches of solid ice beneath the snow. I did a traverse, but had I returned the same way, I probably would have switched to micro spikes or crampons for the inevitable butt sliding. There were high drifts beyond Osceola and one set of tracks down to Tripoli. The descent to Tripoli was easy and quick. The road walk is groomed for Nordic skiing so easy, if long, walk to parking lot.
