Comments
Comments: We wore snowshoes start to finish. The beginning of the Mt Kinsman trail had a nice snow shoe track, but was still very soft. There were also some areas that had some rocks showing through. After the junction for Bald Peak, the trail was even softer and unconsolidated. There were still some visible snow show tracks, and also the trail had started getting chewed up from spikes. No post holes. Once we got onto the KRT, there was a mix of drifting, frozen post holes (none that caused any issues), and some sections over slabs where we would hit the ice under the fresh snow (our snowshoe crampons worked fine). As we continued on, we were surprised to see hikers coming back from South and North Kinsman wearing snow shoes...it was snowing all morning and their tracks had filled in. We started to cross paths with quite a few others, some in shoes, some in spikes. Those in spikes seemed to do fine, but IMO snowshoes would be the better option since the trails are still so soft and unconsolidated.
