The entire loop is new slippery soft powdery snow, 6-8” at ground level increasing to 2-4 FEET at elevation. Many places with drifting.
A solitary man booted/cramponed/obliterated the entire loop. He went up OBP and down FW. The entire loop is post-holed. Two to four FEET in places.
Four of us SSers went up FW but the post-holer went down that way so he undid the soft SS track we started. Don’t be fooled by SS tracks starting up FW. They end at the first switchback after the 5th crossing. A nice older gent casually snowshoed the falls up to the first switchback today. The booter passed him going down but the man was able to repair some of the damage. Even with SS on we sunk up to 3 feet the last 1/4 mile up FW so there is a poop-ton of snow up there. Route finding across the Ridge was sketchy in a few places due to lots of drifting so I may have gone slightly off track here and there. Regardless, just follow the 2-4 FOOT post holes now to get you across.
I descended OBP and I know there were two others behind me in non-mountaineering SSs but I believe the postholing was too severe to be repaired.
Recommend snowshoes for the next several days since we’ve got another foot and a half or so coming between tonight and Saturday morning. |
