Gorgeous hike! Lower part of Kinsman Ridge trail had some fresh powder and was newly broken by some snowshoers and (unfortunately) some bare-booters who added some lovely post-holes and divots to an otherwise pristine trail (boooo!). Once I passed the snowshowers I was breaking trail to the summit, but the trough was fairly well established until the final stretch, above treeline, where it was tough to follow the trail. No cairns, but after a few false starts I was able to get back on track. Continued over the Kinsman Ridge trail down to the Lonesome Lake Trail, where I broke trail part of the way through lovely powder. There was one super-dicey spot where I basically had to jump down a small cliff of iced-over rock and then glissade. Might have been able to avoid by bushwacking around. Seems someone else turned back when they got to it from the other direction, b/c trail was broken the rest of the way. Final stretch of Lonesome Lake trail was postholed by a bare-footer (WEAR SNOWSHOES ON UNPACKED TRAILS, PEOPLE!) and then pretty well packed from the lake down. Pemi Trail was totally unbroken -- a slog through wet, heavy snow. |
