Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The main stream & 2 minor crossings were easily rock-hoppable. I counted 45 drainages and rivulets running across the trail in the first mile, 18 were bridged to some extent. These are long stepovers or jumps but can be annoying if the snow collapses because you'll get wet.

Comments
Comments: Started out in spikes. The 2-mile road walk was well-packed from snowmobile traffic so it was fast. Kept spikes on until the stream crossing at 1.7 then switched to snowshoes. At least 5 people ahead of me had the trail packed down nicely! It was a bit sticky in spots down low but mostly powder as one gained elevation. The traverse was a steady go with good traction and very few slips to the side. About halfway up 2 hikers came down and the trail got much more powdery; the other (3) then came down within 5-10 minutes of each other and the last 1/3 of the traverse got quite tedious. I finally reached the zig-zags that approach the summit of signal ridge but I lost my impetus due to a sore right hip flexor from yesterday's 11-mile trail breaker. I pulled the plug and turned around just below treeline on Signal Ridge. I was less than .7 from Carrigain! I rarely bail out but I just didn't have it today even with great weather and plenty of time to summit. I'm glad I did because I felt really wishy-washy all the way back to the car. Met Heat Lightning around 3 PM just above the stream crossing and he was just heading UP. We were lamenting the fact that this great snowshoe trough would be buried under a foot of snow the next day. Oh well, somebody will have lots of fun breaking it out again!
