Wapack Trail up to the summit of North Pack was nothing short of delightful. Group of 3 of us started off around 9:15 and were pleasantly surprised to see the beginning of a nice snowshoe trench being established. All told, there were 5 folks in front of us, the three of us, and two behind us all in snowshoes.
Unfortunately, the last 6 folks we passed on our way down did not have snowshoes on, so the track we laid will have gotten pretty torn up. The snow is definitely plenty soft for snowshoes, and probably will be for the foreseeable future.
As far as the “attempt” of Pack Monadnock, the original plan was to traverse the two peaks, but there were no tracks on Wapack Trail heading south from the North Pack summit. Cliff Trail was broken out by a single set of snowshoe tracks. Back at Miller, both the Auto Road and main trails had been broken by at least some snowshoers (and possibly barebooters as well). |
