Parking area off Passaconaway Road was plowed and could hold 8-10 cars. It filled up pretty well today but didn't overflow. |

 | Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow - Wet/Sticky |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
The only water crossing has a nice bridge. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Not much to write about here. No blowdowns, at least none that weren't buried under snow. Any drainage issues would've been buried by all the snow we got yesterday. Didn't really look carefully to see if there was a trail sign at the trailhead, but it's obvious where to go. And there's no sign at the summit, but there doesn't need to be since there's no trail junction there. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Shouldn't have any major issues. Didn't see any today though. |
|
 | Bugs: |
None. |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
Nada. |

What a fun hike up South Moat! Seven of us from a Meetup group, all in snowshoes, found an incredible winter wonderland and lots of beautiful views. The trail had been broken out earlier this morning by a pair of snowshoers, and a couple of others started up the trail before us. They had done the tough work, but we all helped create a pretty good snowshoe track. There are a few short but steep sections where we had to watch our footing carefully in the snow, since some of it was loose, but the climb was mostly moderate. It wasn't windy except for the very top, where there was minor drifting. The snowshoe track ends at the summit of South Moat - anyone wanting to do a traverse is going to be breaking trail for a considerable distance.
Counting my group, probably about 15 people climbed South Moat today. Everyone was wearing snowshoes, so the track is looking fairly good. Snowshoes are still 100% needed on this trail - considering the recent weather, you really shouldn't be hiking anywhere in the White Mountains without them. Go get South Moat while it's good! |
