Comments
Comments: Hike start at 8am with 2 other parties, one doing the Captain ice climbing and the other party with a co-hiker Mark and dog Oby. We connected later on when trail breaking on the upper part of signal ridge and the traverse in howling conditions of the open ridge below Carrigain as well as on the way down were a great companion support.
Microspikes up to signal ridge somewhat ok, then snowshoes a necessity in the loose and blown in trail conditions. Trail was lost due to blown snow drift on and off. This got particularly bad after the ridge crossing.
In the pertaining wind conditions there was no wallowing at the tower, except for Orby taking extensive snow bath, really funny.
The way back wasn’t an easy ‘run’ either as wind had blown in our tracks until we reached the lower part of signal ridge. Finally the road walk, though downhill but still a harrowing end of a 14 miler. Reached parking lot short before and around 6pm.
Don’t attempt this without snowshoes for now and the upcoming week.
