Absolutely perfect day above treeline. Wore spikes up to Pierce, then switched to snowshoes just after starting towards Eisenhower. Trails were in great condition and stayed that way with all the folks in snowshoes!
Spikes were sufficient in the morning going up to Pierce, but snowshoes wouldn’t have been overkill. There’s a small layer of snow on top of the packed trail that isn’t solid. Snowshoes were absolutely needed heading over to Eisenhower, due to the sun warming up the snow and easily sinking in spikes into the snow.
Wore snowshoes over to Eisenhower and kept them on all the way back to the car. You could tell the places on the trail below Pierce that what sticky snow from the sun and warm temps. Any wind had completely died by the afternoon, so it was nothing but blue skies and calm air. |
