Comments
Comments: Did two laps today, snowshoes all day. Broke trail through 3-4” of new snow this morning with no problem up to the Jackson summit. Tried to press on towards Mizpah, but it was rough going. Route finding was challenging, and there was much more new snow than I expected. I could easily stick my pole handle deep in places, and the wind was filling in any traces of recent activity, so I turned around. On the descent from Jackson back to 302, I didn’t see anyone, but other groups had come most of the way to the summit, packing down the track quite nicely.

The weather didn’t worsen in the early afternoon, and I was reluctant to call it a day. I also didn’t want to break any more trail or take chances with the weather on an a longer alternate route, so I was content to strip my pack down to a minimal carry and take advantage of the packed track for a speed run back to the summit.

Webster-Jackson and Jackson Branch are packed nicely almost to the summit, where snow is still loose on some steep sections, and more snow is falling now. Webster Branch wasn’t touched today. Webster Cliff northbound from Jackson to Mizpah will take a lot of work or a significant thaw/ freeze cycle to pack down. I did not check out Webster Cliff southbound to 302.
