Beautiful weather today! Blue skies and we even saw Washington peeking out of the clouds! My son and I wanted to squeak in one more winter 4K today. We did Tom last month and liked the trip so much that Field sounded like a good idea. The going was good until Tom Spur, and then the trails were rougher. It seemed some barebooters had been through and pock-marked the trail. However, several snowshoers other than us went through since, so it's been tramped out more again (hopefully). Field was very cold and windy, but the sites were gorgeous, so we lingered. Another hiker convinced us that Avalon was a good idea, so we headed that way next. The trail between Field and Avalon was well packed. Once heading off of Avalon, I switched to spikes from my snowshoes (worn the whole time from car to this point). I hadn't seen areas of drifting snow since A-Z, everything was nicely packed on Avalon, and I was sliding on the now-melting snow so it seemed like a good idea. In fact, at this point a lot of people were opting for spikes over snowshoes, and not having issues. It was a day to use ALL THE GEAR. |
