Comments
Comments: XC trails, road and Gale River trail were pretty well packed. Maybe an inch or two of loose snow but packed underneath. Little more loose snow getting closer to the hut and then onto Galehead but totally doable without snowshoes. Heading up to South Twin was about 2-4 inches of loose snow covering some minor postholes. Little softer. South Twin to North Twin (and back) had about 4-6 inches of loose snow with some deep drifting. I chose to leave my snowshoes at the Gale River trailhead after seeing what the trail looked like and have zero regrets. Barefooted comfortably in my trail runners with zero traction all day. Saw two people with snowshoes on the Twins and another person with just spikes who did Galehead and just South Twin. Spikes/snowshoes might be helpful for the climb up to South Twin and the North Twin spur if that’s what you’d prefer as it’s still a little soft and drifty but it’s well broken out and postholing wasn’t an issue. This was my dog and I’s 115th peak this winter season and the views were dreamy.
