Comments
Comments: Snowshoes all day, and the four other hikers, that I saw, were also wearing them. The trails are currently near-perfect, with a beautiful snowshoe trough. There are a few postholes but not a significant number. I would recommend leaving the light traction home as there is currently no ice anywhere and the sun and warm temperatures are softening the trail during daylight hours, making snowshoes the best way to go!
There is a bushwhack to the Tom summit which bypasses the little stone stair section right below the summit. When you get to a junction, going right is the actual trail and going left is the bushwhack. The actual trail is broken out and soft. The bushwhack goes over and through a lot of vegetation and there has been damage to multiple trees already. I would recommend not taking the bushwhack but rather staying on the regular trail.
As noted by Marilyn, someone does appear to have headed toward Zealand on the AZ Trail; you can still see those tracks today. More people have been to Willey since the prior reports, but it’s still less traveled than Field/Tom. The trail past Willey down to the ladders is fully drifted over, at this point.
Great day and I was very happy to meet Dave D and an experienced ADK hiker, and to have a nice long chat with them!!
