 | Comments: |
All variety of ground conditions today. Some bare ground, bare ledges, ledges with breakable ice with water running underneath, frozen slush, deep postholes on the snow field below the summit, and most of the distance on hard packed granular snow with some postholes. The pathway is roughened up by bare booters during a warmer spell so snowshoes would have been difficult to use. My snowshoes remained on my pack today. The cooler temperatures and lack of sun resulted in a very hard surface that was icy in places. Microspikes proved to provide traction. The forecasted snow will change these conditions. Warmer weather will pose a risk of deep postholing in the deeper snow below the summit.
Saw a pileated woodpecker.
On descent I met many other hikers including two Forest Service employees. Noone was wearing snowshoes due to the surface conditions.
Good views below the cloud deck. |
