Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at location where Carter Mountain rd becomes a class IV ATV road; spaces on the right for a few cars. Carter Mountain rd started paved, but turned into a soft, muddy dirt road. My low clearance car got through, but I could see travel getting difficult if there is a lot of rain or melting.

Comments
Comments: Walk along the ATV trail was pretty easy via barebooting. Once on the Hersey mountain trail snowshoes were best. Started with 6-8" of snow that increased to a foot or more with elevation. Even in snow shoes, we sank in 6", and in some cases around the rocky slopes, we sank in 2-3 feet. The trail was difficult to follow since it is not blazed, therefore part of our route was more like bushwhacking towards the summit. All the effort was worth it for the views towards the Belknap range and to check out the cabin at the summit. An intermediate location in an open field offered great distant views north to Franconia Notch and east. We returned following our tracks back to the ATV trail.
