 | Comments: |
Despite the warm weather and rain, virtually full snowpack remains.
Snowshoes very much needed on Old Mountain Erode at this point, as portions of the packed footbed have audible water flowing under it. If you Microspike it in the next few days, you're likely to go through and get wet. A few Microspikers found that out by the looks of it.
Crawford Ridgepole never saw consistent usage this winter, so there isn't a great established footbed. A little bit of monorail sticking up from the snowpack early on, followed by a very brief (only a few feet long) bare spot in the usual wind scoured area, then back to full snowpack of about 1-2 feet. Particularly as things soften with the lack of footbed, snowshoes are the way to go.
Cloudy afternoon with a brief glimpse of sun and then some mist. Appeared to be a temperature inversion with mid 40s at the trailhead and probably mid 50s at the summit.
Snowshoes needed through the holiday weekend. If next week's warm forecast holds, it'll be full-on mud season and you'll want to avoid this approach until Old Mountain Erode somewhat dries out. |
