On trail by 0715. After coming up Basin Cascade, we did a loop going up Fishin Jimmy, across the Cannon Balls and down Lonesome Lake. All trails were firm thanks to the cold overnight temps and they stayed firm except where exposed to a lot of midday sun. All trails have some deep post holes on the sides of the snowshoe trench, and have a lot of boot divots from when they softened up last week. We were happy with Hillsound spikes and appreciated the extra spike depth over Katoola microspikes today. We were concerned that the sun would cause the trails to become unsupportive on our way out so we carried snowshoes but we didn't need to use them. Kinsman ridge has a deep snow pack and the canopy branches give you the car wash pretty much all the way across. Recommend wearing eye protection, a hat and keeping your head up. The full moon was setting right at dawn. With a forecast for cold overnight temps and clear skies, tomorrow could be a great day to hike up somewhere under the light of the full moon and celebrate Easter watching the sun rise over the mountains! |
