South-facing with hardwood and a gravel footbed, the Red Hill Trail is usually one of the first trails in the Lakes Region to melt out each spring.
Trail is essentially snow free up to 1,350 feet in elevation, then patchy monorail in places thereafter. Monorail becomes more consistent a few tenths before the summit, but one can generally walk alongside it while remaining in the footbed (since it's a Jeep road) and not trampling the vegetation. Some muck under the deteriorating monorail near the Eagle Cliff junction.
In my opinion Microspikes or snowshoes will be superfluous on this trail unless we get some frozen precip.
It should be noted that the northern facing slopes still look to have nearly full snowpack, so snowshoes are still likely needed for the upper Eagle Cliff Trail or if one goes to Red Hill South Peak/Deer Hill.
Warm, sunny afternoon with temperatures in the mid 80s. |
