Trail was mostly dry for the first mile or so, then patches of mud and running water, then snow patches but very shallow ones until about 1700’ where the snow was covering larger areas of the trail and breaking through to the running water beneath was unavoidable at times. I wear waterproof knee socks and waterproof boots so I walked through all the mud and puddles without a problem. Bald knob trail was mostly dry and snow free. Turtleback mountain trail was only about 30% deep snow patches where I postholed & was glad I left the snowshoes in the car because they would have felt silly to only put on for .1 of a mile - this was the kind of spring hike I adore! Just a few fun bits of slippery snow and postholing and so warm, the snow is melting at lightning speed! I did put on my rock spikes to go down from Turtleback summit to the start of the Bald Knob trail but may not have truly needed them. |
