Bet you thought spring was on the horizon! Fooled yah. It was snowing/freezing rain when I arrived at the Waumbek Trailhead this morning, the first hike in 5+ months where I didn't bother to boil my water in the morning. It's mud up to 3000'. From 3000' to Starr King there's about an inch of snow on top of ice/slush. From Starr King to Waumbek, it's stable monorail with 2-3 inches of very powdery snow on top. I was able to bareboot the entire hike - trail crampons and snowshoes went for a ride. But given warmer temperatures all this will change. Bring snowshoes because all this will turn to mashed potatoes. |
