 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trail blazes beyond the Crippies to Mt Langdon are scarce and faint. In this portion of the trail, one must be attentive to follow the trail through the open woods. Once the trail re-enters the thicker woods the trail corridor becomes more evident even without good blazes. The blazing is frequent and bright yellow from the trailhead to the Crippies.
There are many tree falls on the trail. Some are large (~1.5' dia) while others could easily be cut with a folding saw. The most blowdowns are on Mt Langdon including the top of Mt Langdon. This area is notorious for wind damage. The trail has been well maintained in the past. I would expect the trail to be cleared by SSOC in their annual maintenance. I cleared out lots of branches and sticks from the trail. |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Fine for dogs. Limited sources of water on the ridge. There are at least o couple of small pools aside the trail. |

A few out today. Not a nuisance. |

 | Comments: |
Decided to hike the Mt Stanton Trail to Mt Langdon because I expected the only significant snow to be restricted to the very upper part of Mt Langdon. It was nice hiking without the snowshoes. There was snow of 1 to 2 feet depth for the last 0.2 miles to the summit of Mt Langdon. Otherwise there were only short stretches of snow in spots mainly confined to the low area between the Crippies and Mt Langdon. In places with the snow, there is no discernable rail to walk on. I suspect this trail is lightly used in the winter.
The sign at the trailhead warns that the Langdon shelter has been removed. The toilet has been retained. It is now a tent/hammock camping site.
There are a few steep pitches with rough footing from loose rock, dirt, and leaves on the east sides of Mt Stanton and Mt Pickering. The ledges in these steep spots can be tricky if wet or icy. Thankfully they were mainly dry today.
Many Red Pines on the trail. Good views to both the south and north as the trail winds it way back and forth across the ridge.
The only others hiking to Mt Langdon were a couple originally from Cambridge UK now in Bristol NH. The only other hikers were two solo hikers; one from Cambridge MA & Bartlett NH and the other from Windham ME. |
