A GRAND day was had today. We both had ideas on hikes today in the immediate vicinity... "Are you thinking what I am thinking?" "Yup" And so we just did them all, and more. I am not sure if we should call this a "Baby Grand" (homage to the 1860 Traverse) hike or an 'extended' Welch-Dickey Loop. (A super extended would have been gone and tagged Tecumseh too, but there was rotting snow so we opted not to) ha. If you are looking for snow free, baby pack, zoom zoom to the moon, W/D fits the bill. No spikes nation. We had excellent conditions until we popped onto our bushwhack, so foreign to be in trail runners and a baby pack! We found good wood from Welch to Foss and Green. Between Foss and Green there is still some rotting snow, I went in "BD" on one epic posthole. Green to Hogback was a bit of a different story, the terrain is a bit wonky in there and it kept sucking us into somewhere we didn't want to be. It's far thicker in this section, you'd want to wear pants if you value having skin on your legs for sure. We found what we thought was the HOL on hogback but I went exploring and found the true HOL. Decent going over to Fisher, and a breeze from Fisher to the forest road. Fisher is far better than a sharp stick in the eye for sure. We looped back over Dickey Notch Trail, a lovely chain of beaver ponds. I did note the Cone Demon admiring the peak that bears her namesake. Trailgate with steak tips at the trailhead! A Grand day for sure! Attached is a Steve Smith article about this history of the pair :) |
