First hike of the year with no trace of snow. Trail is dry up to the logging road crossing near Mascot Ledge. After that, plan on getting your feet wet. Much of the trail has running water down it. Its not a problem just plan on getting your feet wet. THe views are still good but the hardwood look like they are really to leaf out.
I took a quick walk up the logging road to check out if the trail up to Mascot Ledge is still easy to find. It is just take a right at the crossing a short distance opposite a large growing in logging landing. Look to the other side of the road (to the right) and its very obvious.
I also took a quick detour to Mascot Pond, the former lodge and farm site is definitely growing in, the beavers need to move back in the open up the view. Still plenty of campsites and I think the beach has gotten large over the years. I am alwasy surprised that this pond does not get used extensively but its normally quiet.
AMC has definitely improved the signage from the parking area to the turn off Hogan Road. FWIW, this trail especially on the island has the reputation of being "ticky" |
