 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked near gate where New Colony Road becomes class 6. After three minutes of walking we went back to truck to see how far up the road we could get towards trailhead. We made it about .3 -.4 before I chickened out at some deep ruts, not knowing how muddy or rough it might get ahead of us. In retrospect, a high clearance (pickup not SUV) 4x4 could make it to trailhead going very slow in spots. Most of the ruts were dry. It is apparent people get out in the mud and drive this stretch for fun. |

Mowglis trail is a real gem, as is the Firescrew summit. Saw one hiker who said he has hiked it dozens of times and we were only the 2nd group he has every seen. The class 6 road walk is pleasant and passes a logging swath and pristine pond, both with views up to Firescrew and Cardigan. The trail itself is mellow and has a nice soft footbed most of the way. Up high you pass a cool little shelter, “Crag Shelter”, and from there to the summit the trail gets steeper and ledgy, with some easy scrambles. The views from summit pretty much include everything you see from Cardigan, plus an amazing closeup view of Cardigan’s rocky summit cone. We have hiked Cardigan 20+ times and this was so much more enjoyable due to the softer trail and remote solitude! Superior views than several of the 52WAV’s in my opinion. |
