Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I was first in the modest parking area (don't block the gate) and on return there were two more, one had passed me in fat tire bike.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Nothing significant on my route. I had no expectations to cross the Swift River but it didn't look like it was above the knee especially if one used the underwater rocks line that partially cross it.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Nanamocomuck section north of road had two significant blowdowns, one a tricky step on to get over 8" spruce with a small sidekick, and maybe an 8" beech stepover. Bog Brook Rd had one area eroding enough to threaten the road in that area in the future. It was after Nanamocomuck crosses it. Brunel was in pretty good shape with some leaf clearing water flows in the last storm before Owls Cliff. Owls Cliff was good and now nicely signed. Sawyer Pond section was pretty good, a nice woods walk and with good signage for Brunel and Nanamocomuck. Long ago that wasn't the case. I wrestled some broken gnarly stems to the side and cut a couple smaller but bike blocking stems on Sawyer Pond. I picked, kicked and flicked a lot of debris off the trails or to the side but there's more.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Good dog trails.
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies swarming the vehicle at the parking area so I sprayed Picaridin on me before exiting and they kept their distance. After Nanamocomuck I turned on to the road and the skeeters swarmed. So I sprayed my clothing as well and they weren't an issue until my return to the road later in the day, but instead of reapplying I kept a good pace knowing once I got on Nanmocomuck again they wouldn't be an issue.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing

Comments
Comments: I saw no one other than the fat tire cyclist on Bog Brook Rd. Ahh, solitude. It's such a nice area of the WMNF but I have no fear this report will attract more use without 4Ks, the Swift blocking easy access, limited parking off Bear Notch Rd and the need to hike a lot of Bog Brook Road. I had some hope that the snowmobile trail that crossed the hiking trail would take me over to Sawyer Pond and used it on the descent but after going west of the trail it headed down paralleling Brunel and then hit the Bog Brook Rd a bit west of it. It's fast though. I would have liked to have hiked Nanamocomuck from its crossing of Bog Brook Rd to Sawyer Pond but this old Bog Brook Trail route has been flooded with failing bog bridges in the summer for many years now, so I don't even check it out anymore. With more time or younger legs I would have seen what condition Nanamocomuck was in over to Church Pond.
