Peaks
Peaks Goose Eye Mountain, Mt. Carlo, NH
Trails
Trails: Goose Eye Trail, Mahoosuc Trail, Carlo Col Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, May 28, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Success Pond Road is bumpy, as always, but definitely driveable. Thank you for maintaining this road! There is room for 3 cars at the trailhead and there were 3 of us. The Mt Success Trail trailhead had about 25 cars around it when I headed out - wowza!
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Easy rock hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The Mahoosuc Trail (AT) between Wright Trail junction and Mt Success Trail junction has 7 major blowdowns (chainsaw will be needed). Three are complicated and there are herd paths around them which are stomping on the delicate vegetation. Carlos Col Trail also has approximately a half dozen large blowdowns (chainsaw will also be needed here). All of these are stepovers and none are being bypassed. Goose Eye Trail is free of significant blowdowns.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: None today.
Bugs
Bugs: The bugs are absolutely insane. I have never had this many bites (yesterday was bad too, in Randolph). I tried to outrun them; I don’t think that I was successful.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing today.

Comments
Comments: I hiked up Goose Eye Trail, then the Mahoosuc Trail from the Wright Trail junction down to the Mt Success Trail junction, and then hiked down Carlos Col Trail. I stopped by the shelter. I saw 6 AT thru hikers (4 SOBO and two brave souls were NOBO!). I helped to redirect a dad and his 5ish year old son who were looking for the plane crash site but about to go down the first crazy boulder descent on the Mahoosuc Trail near the NH/ME border. They had turned the wrong way and were about 0.75 miles off course. All was fixed and they were on to see the plane crash site. :)
