Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at the top of the drive-able portion at gate on Gale River Road. Plenty of room for cars, two cars were already parked there and two different ones replaced them. I met four people hiking in on Haystack Road and they told me the gate was still locked.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: all rock hop-able
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: FR 25/snowmobile trail in good condition with some mud pits. Both bootleg trails easy to follow well worn foot beds with blowdowns removed here and there.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I think the bushwhack is too steep and thick for most pups (and people)
Bugs
Bugs: The bugs at the end of the Gale River Road were fierce black flies and mosquitoes joined forces. There was rarely a breeze out there this morning. I was glad I had my headnet. While bushwhacking up from the Nubble the bugs seems to disappear they were only bad down low.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: While descending the PsN bootleg path about halfway down I found a blue long sleeve tech shirt. I carried it out, email me if it is yours

Comments
Comments: Decided to hike to the Nubble I haven't been there without snow in some time. Bootleg path is easy to follow all the way to the top of the cool rocky top. Love the views there and I expected to find people since there were two cars at the gate but I had the lovely granite bump to myself! I made such good time I decided to try a new to me route up to PaN (not the first time I have bushwhacked from the snowmobile trail but this effort was not as bad as the others I have done), I climbed down from the nubble and went stragiht ahead, followed an old path past an old campsite and then stayed west of the brook, I found nice open woods and old moose herd paths. Away from the brook, I stayed on that ridge all the way to the summit popping out next to the canister. From elevation 3000 just as it starts to get steep it was a bushwhack with spruce thick or pokey, ledges to go around, crawl under and crawl over, great fun. I didn't find a balloon today. The register needs a new large zip lock badly. I put the notebook in a new small ziplock inside the zipped bag. The bootleg trail is easy to follow down to Haystack Road. what can I say other than I must be getting old because I can recall when this path didn't exist. A little more than halfway down I met one person on the their way up dressed in just a tank top and shorts, no pack or waterbottle and I asked Do you know where you're going? He said Yes, I said have fun. I met another pair on Haystack Road and they said they were headed to PaN. I then said Oh the gate must be still locked and they said yes. Just before I started my short bushwhack to cut the corner to get back to FR 25 I met a mother and daughter on their way to Galehead hut. Cutting the corner wasn't as clever as I thought it would be since I had to climb down not one but two deep drainages and cross their water. FR 25 from Haystack Road is almost all uphill and it good walking and glad I had my headnet to wear again. Fun seat of pants outing.
