Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None were an issue.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Carter-Gibbs Trail has a very small, duck-under, handsaw-able blowdown south of the final water crossing (after the climb up from the cascades). Elwell Trail has two punky/rotten walk-around softwood blowdowns (Silky saw) just west of the Mowglis Mountain summit, two thigh-high walk-arounds in tandem (e-saw) right at the beaver pond overlook ledge, and then a large rotten step-over (e-saw) about a quarter of a mile east of the intersection with the Back 80 Trail. Elwell Trail section between Mowglis Mountain and Back 80 Trail is brushy in spots, mainly beech tree branches. (Old logging cuts from over a decade ago have filled in nicely.)
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Bugs were not an issue -- they were there, both black flies and mosquitoes -- but the breeze kept them at bay. (Or, it could have been the smoke from the wildfires in Nova Scotia -- quite the haze in the air all day.)

Comments
Comments: This 11-mile loop is a favorite of ours, and gives us a chance to check out the condition of some trails we use frequently, see some wildflowers, old foundations, and numerous waterfalls -- usually without seeing a soul.

We did see plenty of critters, including a mother grouse shouting at us to stay away from one her chicks that had run onto the trail -- we gave her a wide berth.

We cleaned some deadfall, moved a couple of blowdowns, and did some minor brushing as we walked along.

Other than the aforementioned trail maintenance items to address, the trails are in good shape. Note, though, that some sections of the trails are quite wet and muddy, from the recent rain.
